Yesterday our replacement van (which was older) 👎 eventually arrived at 1.00pm.we literally threw everything from one van to the other as all we wanted to do was get going as we had a four hour trip to Roma. Before our replacement van arrived the camp manager wanted us to put our van onto another sight to free up the one we were on, As Apollo couldn't say when they were going to pick it up. I sure hope it's gone by now. We thought that's fare enough as we weren't paying for that night but you wouldn't believe it when we went to put the slider in it wouldn't work and you aren't allowed to move it with the slider out. Camp manger took over and just told Apollo that he was going to move it. So Peter just drove it to another site. We don't know what's happen since then. The managers of the camp were really great and supportive for the two days we were there. Enough of that we are now on our way continuing through south western Queensland to Roma.
I took the above photo, obviously in spring, from a brochure as we couldn't get out to see the city so this is to show what Toowoomba could look like. It is known as the garden city.
Our drive took four hours from Toowoomba to Roma. We passed lots of cotton fields as the above shows. There were pieces of cotton blowing along the sides of the highway. We finally arrived at Roma at five just on dusk. We originally wanted to get further than Roma but with our very late start had to shorten that as we wouldn't travel after dark. We stopped at the Roma gun clay shooting club as we had read about their grounds are used for campers as well. Different but really nice just a huge sealed area all marked out into sites. Unfortually didn't get a photo as when we left this morning it was pouring with rain and didnt even think of it. It was run by a young NZ couple just out of town. Bit hard to find them but the manager directed us onto the campsite until we arrived. A real different way to spend the night in a camper.
As soon as we arrived at the gun club we had a big tidy up setting up house again as I said earlier everything was just chucked all over the floor, bed, wherever. PT wanted to help but I said no you have been driving all afternoon so I sat him in the dining area, went and brought him a couple of beers and said, you sit there and relax , I will put everything away. The above photo is taken from the front looking back through the dining and kitchen to the bedroom with bathroom at the back. This is with the slider out makes such a difference re space.
Closer to the bedroom, it what they call an island bed that you leave made up and can get round it OK during the day.
Standing in the Bathroom looking back to the cab.
'This shows what it is like when the slider is pushed in while driving. Such a difference.
Bit hard to get a photo of the bathroom due to the small area. Full size shower on the right.
Today we didn't leave as early as we should have of. On the road by nine driving four hours to Tambo. The above photo is the main drag in Roma. Took this photo this morning before we left town to show how all the cars back into their angled parks. Something different to what we do.
These trees are all around Roma lining the streets. They fascinated us they are called bottle trees.
Driving through Amby smallest town we have seen this is about it. Only about 280 people.
These are the road we are driving on straight for ever. We really panic when we see a bend coming up !!!
Driving through Mitchell. We will see a lot of these old pubs.
My driver he is taking good care of me. And man what a driver.
This is what they call a road train
Now to overtake this beast which has three trailers behind his cab. They are all of 120 feet long.
Now what all we can do is go over on the grass and gravel and hope for the best. Made it.
Now in Tambo Main Street. Very quiet as they don't open on Saturdays.
Tambo Dam park. This area once supplied the town water but did not meet the growing needs of the town. Over the years the dam has been enlarged and provides a habitat for the birds.
Reminder of Tambo past road trains
PT at the library and info centre
Tambo Teddies. To help the employment in the village the ladies make Teddies. Started in 1993
Tambo Pub where we went and had a drink at five. Then watched the chicken races as you will see below.
The chickens all prettied up for the races
They fill the remote control truck up with seed to make them run after it.
The Aussies we met in the pub.
We seem to be out of phone coverage so communications by e mail only at this stage. We now can only use wi fi in the campsites as we can't hook into our phone data. A bit restricting. Bev you may have to e mail us re Nicole please. Sorry this last post took so long for these last two days to be posted but so much has been going on as you know and with the high driving kms per day to catch up on time not a lot of spare time but things are coming right now and all good. With the rush with getting this post away, if you read it earlier it was so full of mistakes with the rush of posting it before we left the camp wi fi. If we miss a day or so while we are in the outback you will know why. Maybe over the next week.
