We left Karumba at 8.00am heading to Croydon. The last two days in Karumba have been very windy and yesterday must have reached gusts of in excess of 40knots. Really rough night last night by the river, and the van was been battered around during the night. We are now travelling West to East on the Savannah Highway. Croydon was once the third largest town in North Queensland servicing a goldfield that extended for 18km. In those days it had 36 pubs and now only one remains as below.
We are now leaving the outback, lots of driving but has been a great experience and we have really enjoyed it. Now in the historic town of Croydon.
Last night in Karumba we saw our last sunset. The area is known for its sunsets. This was looking over the river from where we were camping.
Just before we left town yesterday we heard this chorus of squawking birds in a tree. These parrot looking birds were outside the fish factory. As I got closer the noise got louder, they certainly didn't like me in their territory.
Went out to the point before we left to where the mouth of the river meets the sea. There are quite a few sandbanks out there.
When we arrived at Croydon we went straight out to the Belmore dam, the town's water supply. Like Cloncurry they have made the area into a recreation area for families and the tourists.
We have taken on a new driver. (The one on the right).
Arriving into Croydon the old Pub on the corner. It's so old walking around it it felt like it could crumble around me.

Standing on the verandah.
Looking into the entrance of the Hotel. It just doesn't look safe.
Looking up the Main Street of Croydon. The two buildings on the right will explain below.
The original butchers shop which was almost destroyed in 1996 by a cyclone. They have manage to prop it up to save it from collapsing. Look closely and see the name the jolly butcher.
Next door, was the next butcher but that's not in use now either.
Just up the road further is our campground. That's us.
Croydon Historic Precinct. Police Station
Town Hall
The courthouse. All been preserved. Couldn't go inside as they close them for the off season to do maintenance.
We arrived in Croydon at lunch time and just had a walk round this small town . Then we relaxed in camp. Off again tomorrow for our next adventure to the Undara Lava Tubes. Spending tomorrow night there in the what they call 'A Resort' but just another camping ground in the bush 14kms off the main road. We are on the 8.00am tour of the Lava Tubes on Monday morning.
