AIRLIE BEACH TO CAPE PALMERSTON, THURSDAY 23rd May 2019.

Left camp about 7.30am after waking up to a lovely sunny morning which was nice after the drenching we got yesterday. As we couldn't walk round the coastal boardwalk to the town yesterday we felt we had missed out on a lot. Particularly as you don't see much from the road driving in. So before we left Airlie Beach we drove down to the marina area to walk the section of the coastal path along in front of the marina. Lovely area. If anyone read yesterday's blog without a few marina photos  I have now added them to yesterday's blog. Scroll down to see.

On the road again left Airlie Beach heading down to Cape Palmerston for the night which is about one hour south of Mackay 10kms off the A1 highway. All up the travelling time today was three hours,  plus the hour or so spent in Mackay.

Turned off  for a drive through Mackay, big city. Went out to slade point probably wasn't worth the drive and time. But the plus was the photos below where well worth seeing which we wouldn't have known about if PT hadn't been chating to some locals, in the distance under the trees. And yes Jen I am having horizon issues but I had climbed a steep rock and was trying to balance at the top in a very strong wind. I was more worried of falling of the rock, it was quite high up there.

About 5kms back towards town from Slade Point we were told by the local above, that we must stop and see the new marina complex which was developed in about 2012. The lighthouse was moved into the area at that time.

I love lighthouses.

Look at this beauty moored below the lighthouse.

Standing under the lighthouse looking along the promenade of shops and cafes. Boat marina on the left.

A further hour down the A1 highway we headed out to Cape Palmerston for a night. A very quiet place 10kms of the A1. Very well set out with each site terraced down a slight slop. Plenty of space between sites.

At the bottom of the camping ground was a short walkway through the trees to the beach. Very pleasant.

After about 150m through the trees we came to the end of the track and there was an opening straight out on to this magic beach.

What we saw when we came out from the trees.

A couple of fisherman surfcasting but didn't seem to have any fish.

Where there are fisherman you will always find PT chating to them. This was a couple from Melbourne so had a good chat. Talked about places to go and camping grounds etc.

I took a photo of a photo to show the situation I was trying to explain. It really is a well worth spot to go and see. Excellent camping facilities and very spacious. Also kangaroos hopping around on the side of the road as we approached the park. You can see that they come into the park as well, probably  when everyone is asleep.

We had a good day, sun out all day. Spend probably over an hour driving through Mackay and out to the point and Marina arriving at Cape Palmerston about 1.30pm. Giving us a good afternoon enjoying the surrounds, the beach and the sun. Sat out on our concrete slab PT had a beer and I had my usual ginger beer. Which by the way we will be going to the Bundaberg ginger beer factory when we come back out to the coast after going inland for a night or two. But before we do that we are heading another three hours south tomorrow to a place out on the coast from Rockhampton called Emu Park. For one or two nights all depends on the weather how long we stay. Then go inland after that. Two weeks this Sunday we will be home. Can't believe how the time has flown.
